Imperial Sand Dunes Elopement Guide

Want to elope somewhere out of this world? The Imperial Sand Dunes make you feel like you’re on another planet! This is definitely in my top three all-time favorite locations to photograph. The photos speak for themselves. You truly can never have a bad day at the dunes. After many, many, many shoots at this beautiful elopement location, I want to tell you everything I know so you can plan the perfect elopement at the Imperial Sand Dunes.

What are the Imperial Sand Dunes?

The Imperial Sand Dunes is a recreational area in southern California over 40 miles long featuring stacks of windblown sand piling up dunes as high as 300 feet. The dunes are most commonly enjoyed by dune buggy or motorbike. However, many non-riders visit to appreciate the area’s natural beauty on foot, some even to wed! The beautiful endless sand creates a magical backdrop for “I do”!

What is the difference between the Imperial, Glamis, and Algodones Dunes?

If you have researched the area, you may have noticed many of these names are used interchangeably. However, Algodones Sand Dunes is the broader term referencing the entire geographical location while the section managed by the Bureau of Land Management is referred to as the Imperial Sand Dune Recreational Area (ISDRA). The recreational area has also been nicknamed “Glamis Sand Dunes” by the off-road vehicle enthusiasts who frequent it.

How to get to the Imperial Sand Dunes?

The Imperial dunes are located in southern California near the Arizona border. It is best to rent a car to explore this sand box. It is about a 2.5-hour drive from San Diego Airport or 3.5-hour drive from the Phoenix Airport. Google Maps is very accurate for directions to the many recreation areas.

When is the best time to go to the dunes?

October-May is the best time to go to avoid the triple-digit highs. I always recommend avoiding summer months for obvious reasons -the biggest one being I am a huge no-shoes in sand advocate and you don’t want to burn your feet! I also suggest going on a weekday if you want a more intimate feel and to avoid crowds and hoards of dune buggies.

Sunrise or Sunset?

A sunset into the silky sands is not one to be missed. However, if your privacy is your priority than I would say sunrise tends to be a little quieter.

Do you need a permit to elope at Imperial Sand Dunes?

Yes, between October 1st and April 15th, permits are required for any street-legal vehicle to enter the dunes. Permits can be purchased for $35 per week if bought in advance or $50 per week if purchased on site. You can purchase permits online here. IF BUYING ONLINE, PURCHASE YOUR PERMIT AT LEAST 5 DAYS IN ADVANCE.

Is there cell phone service?

While I have gotten pings here and there on Verizon, I recommend preparing as if you will not get any signal. Phone service is very limited at Imperial Sand Dunes. This is why I always give a specific meeting spot and time and share vehicle description before your elopement or photoshoot.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Gas

You really are in the middle of nowhere! And the closest gas station sure knows it and will take advantage of your wallet. Make sure you come in with plenty of gas in the tank.

Water

Water water water!!! It is extremely dry in the desert and the last thing you want on your special day is heat exhaustion.

Wind

Out of the many many times at the dunes, there has never not been wind. But we love a wind-blown look! Take advantage of loose, flowy attire, and bring a hair tie if needed!

Elements

The sun out there is no joke! It’s a good idea to have extra sunscreen on hand and lotion. The heat will dry up all moisture in your skin. If you would like a more comfortable drive after you can bring comfy clothes to change into. You’d be surprised by all the places you’ll find sand after!
